The Spine; A Closer Look at Health

Back pain is one of the most prevalent medical problems in the U.S. , the leading cause of long-term disability and the second leading cause of restricted activity with the use of prescription and non-prescription drugs.

According to a 1998 review approximately 107,000 patients are hospitalized annually for nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)-related gastrointestinal (GI) complications and at least 16,500 NSAID-related deaths occur each year among arthritis patients alone. I am not trying to depress you but these figures are overwhelming, yet this problem is generally under-appreciated.

In the 25 years between 1975 and 2000, the incidence of cancer increased significantly, and the number of people diagnosed with cancer is expected to double in the next several decades. Despite these negative health trends, America spends more on healthcare than does any other nation -- an unprecedented $1.55 trillion, which is roughly 15 percent of the U.S. gross domestic product.

An "Alternative" to Drugs and Surgery

One reason the health and well-being of the public suffers today is that most people do not truly understand what health really is. Only through understanding what health and wellness really means are you actually able to understand correctly and seek to achieve the wellness lifestyle.

So what is health? The basic, core definition of health is described as a state of "normal function." So if you wish to seek health you must first find out what it is that causes you to function normally or optimally. To find what really causes you to function you have to go to your anatomy and not to the gym or the health food store. What " causes " function is the Central Nervous System or CNS. The CNS is composed of the brain, spinal cord and spinal nerves and it totally controls all functions and healing of the human body.

The most common and likely way to interfere or cause damage to the Central Nervous System is with the spine. "Abnormal" position of the head and spine and subluxation (misalignment of individual vertebrae) will interfere with the CNS. This interference will inhibit the ability for organs of the body to function or heal "normally." By definition, this result is abnormal or less than optimal health.

If your CNS is unhealthy, you cannot become truly healthy by exercising or eating right alone. You can be healthier, but you cannot be at "normal" or optimal. Any "abnormal" position of the spine, misalignment of the bones, or any changes in these curves indicate a serious problem. It is vital to understand this point--any changes from "normal" will interfere with and eventually damage the Central Nerve System. Interference and damage to the Central Nerve System will always result in "abnormal" function of the body, improper healing, and poor or less than optimal health.

The preventive healthcare and wellness promotion advocated by chiropractic physicians is now more important than ever since the health of the American population is progressively declining : obesity and diabetes are "ever-growing" epidemics among children and adults, infant mortality has recently increased, and self-reported health status scores of adults are declining.

Many people have a misconception about chiropractic and the critical role it plays in health and well-being. That misconception is that chiropractic care is limited to treating back and neck pain. Although many people have experienced relief from back and neck pain through chiropractic services, the foundation, intent, and vision of chiropractic is far beyond simply helping to reduce symptoms.

Chiropractic is the largest licensed, non-medical health-care profession in North America . Doctors of Chiropractic look at the body as a whole and give special attention to the physiological and biochemical aspects including structural, spinal, musculoskeletal, neurological, vascular, nutritional, emotional and environmental relationships. The goal is to correct the cause of poor health, instead of simply masking the symptoms.

If your spine and Central Nervous System are "abnormal," there is a need for corrective chiropractic care. This type of care will restore "normal" spinal position and alignment. By properly restoring normal curves to the spine and aligning the vertebrae, it will eliminate CNS interference allowing your body to function and heal "normally." This gives you your optimum chance to be at 100% of your God-given potential.

The spine is the lifeline of the entire body . Chiropractors are trained to restore normal alignment and proper curvature to the whole spine. Therefore you not only feel well, you stay well. The wellness chiropractor focuses on your general health and well-being, and that of your family. The objective of the wellness chiropractor is to work with you in maximizing your life potential.

What then is wellness? "Wellness is a choice -- a decision you make towards optimal health. Wellness is a way of life -- a lifestyle you design to achieve your highest potential for well being. Wellness is a process - that involves the interaction of the body, mind and spirit -- the appreciation that everything we do, think, feel, and believe has an impact on our state of health."

Chiropractic is based on the philosophy that the body is a self-healing, self-regulating and self-developing organism and that your nervous system is the master system and controller of your body. You live your life through your nervous system. Right now your heart is beating, kidneys are working, liver is functioning, brain chemicals are flowing all without you having to think about it. This is because your nervous system is coordinating it all and making it happen. What would happen if there was interference with the function of your nervous system? It would interfere with you body's ability to heal and regulate.

A limited nervous system means limited wellness. If we want to optimally create higher levels of wellness, we then need to remove nervous system interference as a part of the process. Chiropractors are uniquely trained to do this. Millions of people, from infants to seniors over 100 years old, benefit from chiropractic adjustments every year. A person seeking wellness care enhances their life experience. A wellness patient does not seek merely to maintain the status quo, return to pre-injury status, or prevent illness. Such an individual recognizes that chiropractic care is a way of life -- that is an integral component of a global strategy for human empowerment.
